It has been almost a year since I lost interest in PUBG MOBILE. What began originally as a game testing your survival instincts to the limit turned out to be another mindless shooting fest with an endless number of additional modes with subsequent updates. The last major addition to PUBG MOBILE was based on car racing, which was not only unrelated to battle royale but also difficult to play. What was the PUBG team doing? Probably forgot its roots.
Until this morning, when the game finally opened up its new “Cold Front Survival” mode to everyone. Cold Front Survival Mode brings back what PUBG MOBILE was initially known for, i.e. testing survival instincts to the limits within the confines of your smartphone’s small screen. It’s nowhere near as authentic as the Classic mode matches but it adds the right amount of spice to the battle royale theme and I am already addicted.
PUBG Cold Front Survival Mode: Do you need to download an update?
Thankfully, no. The Cold Front Survival Mode activates automatically if you already installed the last major update to PUBG MOBILE. Open the game and you will see a banner announcing the arrival of the new mode. Additionally, you can also find it under the PlayLab section.
Cold Front Survival Mode: What’s it about?
The Cold Front Survival Mode basically adds an additional layer of authenticity to the battle royale genre. The mode is quite similar to the Classic mode but with an added element of the weather joining your enemies to snatch the opportunity of claiming the Chicken Dinner from you.
PUBG MOBILE Cold Front Survival mode
The new mode takes place in the snowy realms of Vikendi and makes its cold weather a hostile environment for you to fight and survive. Not only do you have to get weapons but you also need to collect wood, kill animals, light a fire, keep yourself safe from frostbite, and gather enough supplies to survive.
Cold Front Survival Mode: Gameplay experience
Similar to the Classic mode matches, I was airdropped with my squad in the snowy map of Vikendi. Vikendi is available entirely from the start, hence you can land anywhere and collect your supplies, just like the good old days when us humans could dance along anywhere (wiping my tears). I did the same too, but this time, I was collecting wood and emergency heat packs along with my UMP1 and its bullets. During my loot session, I found wood branches littered inside houses.
Moving on, as you pick up stuff, your inventory shows two additional items provided as standard by the game. You get a lighter and a skateboard (the latter being the one I forgot to use the whole time). The screen also shows a body temperature meter for when the cold wave (blizzard) hits the map. There’s also a timer ticking alongside the safe zone timer, showing you how much time you have got before the blizzard hits. Only if the real world had given us a timer for an equally deadly virus ((eye rolls!).
As soon as I panic stocked my bag (please don’t judge), I went outside to join my squadmates who, like most teams, had already left me behind. Nonetheless, me being the one with a bigger heart, I came in and helped them score a few kills (thanks, if you are going awww). However, the game warned of an incoming blizzard in 60 seconds. In this mode, you have to dash to the nearest shelter in order to survive the storm.
So I did. Went inside, lit a fire and added a few branches. It takes close to 5 seconds to light a fire and once it’s ready, you will see a fire drum. Stay within the confines of that room and you are safe. Venture out and you will see the body temperature meter going down vastly along with life meter plunging. The timer shows how long will the blizzard last. The fire drum will also show a timer, as to how long it will be lit before you need to add wood. Each wood branch increases the time by almost 15 seconds.
That said, you cannot be at peace during the blizzard. As soon as you light the fire, the map notifies your location to every other player! You can see where your enemies are during this period. One enemy found his way to my bonfire and I had to eliminate him. Lucky for me, he had a raw chicken that one can use to increase body temperature. You have to roast the raw chicken in the fire before you can consume -- do you find such realism in any other mobile game?
Once the blizzard ended, I ventured out and the same old cycle had to be repeated. Look for enemies, kill, collect wood and weapons, and survive the next blizzard. Sadly, I was unable to win matches as some idiot took me out every time in the closing stages (jokes aside, they were skilled players and I was an idiot busy taking screenshots).

In most of the matches, I found two blizzard sessions. You can use the emergency body heat food package (it’s called something like that) if you are stuck in the blizzard outdoors to keep yourself from frostbite. If you are lucky, you can also find a drone (I wasn’t that lucky). The drone will give you an idea of your surroundings, giving you a top-down view on enemies and their bases.
You will also find live chickens running around, which you can kill to stock up with food. Sadly, the only few I found in my games were taken by my teammates.
Does Cold Front Survival Mode give PUBG MOBILE another chance?
I would say that the Cold Front Survival Mode is what PUBG MOBILE needed badly. This mode brings back that realistic element if battle royale while making the weather an active agent. This makes PUBG MOBILE more interesting than before. The cold blizzards require you to work on your strategies cleverly and if you win the match, the experience is simply rewarding.
As we are stuck in our homes avoiding the deadly novel coronavirus outside, the Cold Front Survival Mode in PUBG MOBILE is a great way to kill time. Even if you are a Call of Duty Mobile person, you should try out this mode once. And as for the PUBG MOBILE team, if you are reading, bring us more of this, please.
